Who we are

Aurora’s mission is to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly.

The Aurora Driver will create a new era in mobility and logistics, one that will bring a safer, more efficient, and more accessible future to everyone.

At Aurora, you will tackle massively complex problems alongside other passionate, intelligent individuals, growing as an expert while expanding your knowledge. For the latest news from Aurora, visit aurora.tech or follow us on LinkedIn.

What we are looking for

Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all.

We’re searching for a talented Staff Systems and Safety Engineer to bridge the gap between autonomous vehicle (AV) systems and the enterprise architecture that powers freight operations at scale. In this role, you will ensure our cloud-based infrastructure and applications are dependable, safe, and capable of supporting a massive fleet of autonomous trucks. You will help define and validate how our fleet operations ecosystem interacts with the Aurora Driver at endpoints and on the road, focusing on resiliency during outages, severe weather, and other complex logistics scenarios.

In this role you will

  • Develop use cases and concepts of operation (ConOps) that support safety analysis, requirements development, and feature/function definition for cloud-based services and user-facing applications that manage autonomous freight.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Operations, Cloud Infrastructure, and Autonomy teams to translate product requirements into technical specifications.
  • Own the definition and allocation of requirements across system interfaces, with appropriate decomposition and traceability to implementation at the service level.
  • Perform safety analyses (such as HARA, (P)FMEA, STPA etc.) to ensure the dependability of cloud-to-truck integrations, particularly for systems that support real-time fleet operations and autonomy feedback loops.
  • Define and execute comprehensive Verification & Validation (V&V) plans for scalable cloud services, ensuring end-to-end performance across both machine-automated systems and human-in-the-loop operations.
  • Partner with Enterprise Safety and Product Operations to ensure humans (dispatchers, remote specialists, and first responders) can safely and effectively use our tooling to manage fleet-wide events.
  • Facilitate deep-dives into field events and cloud service interruptions to identify design improvements and prevent future systemic failures.

Required qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field
  • Five or more years experience in systems engineering, safety engineering, or a related field
  • Experience writing verifiable functional and non-functional requirements, preferably in autonomous systems, dependable distributed systems, or system-of-systems contexts
  • Strong foundation in verification and validation methods for safety-critical or mission-critical systems where human-machine interaction is a core component.
  • Proven ability to work in high-ambiguity environments with evolving priorities, while managing diverse stakeholders across software, product, and operations teams

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience deploying features or products at scale within a logistics or freight environment
  • Familiarity with cloud-based dashboarding and performance monitoring for distributed systems
  • Experience with various testing modalities and strategies
  • Familiarity with microservices architecture, cloud infrastructure, operational tooling, and modern release processes (e.g., AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD, observability stacks)
  • Familiarity with modern programming languages (e.g., C++ and Golang) and API frameworks (gRPC/REST)

The base salary range for this position is $189,000 - $274,000 per Year. Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
