Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all. We’re searching for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Sensor Cleaning System.
The HPE Mechanical Design team is responsible for the development of all custom hardware modules in the Aurora Driver Kit (ADK) including Compute modules, Sensor Pods, and Lidar. The team works cross-functionally with EE, layout, CAE, Reliability, EMC, NPI, Operations, and other R&D teams to deliver the robust, scalable electro-mechanical solutions that power the Aurora Driver. Our team starts development at the earliest stages of product scoping and technology exploration and carries products through mass production at scale with our manufacturing partners.
The ideal candidate should have experience developing electromechanical systems that maintain sensor cleanliness through adverse weather and environmental conditions. They should have experience throughout the entire development process from design, through functional verification, and scaling manufacturing to market. The candidate should have a demonstrated history of design ownership of shipping automotive hardware in the ADAS or AV space. This role will be responsible for expanding and improving upon the Aurora sensor cleaning system. They will work with perception, sensor, and product teams to develop robust solutions to expand the Aurora Drivers operational domain. The role will work closely with fellow mechanical, optical, CAE engineers to rapidly iterate on novel hardware solutions, validate functionality in both bench and fleet vehicles, and scale these solutions to mass production using global contract manufacturers.
In this role you will
- Design and validate electromechanical components and systems to keep automotive sensors free of debris and contaminants such as rain, snow, ice, bugs, and dirt.
- Design and validate surrogate test infrastructure to simulate weather and other contamination sources in support of ADK component and integration validation
- Design and integrate sensor cleaning solutions with surrounding Aurora Driver Kit (ADK) components and with OEM vehicle interfaces
- Hands-on prototype next generation sensor cleaning systems in lab, track, and real world environments and conditions
- Collaborating with manufacturing partners to kick off mass production tooling and complete engineering builds leading up to the start of high volume production
- Collaborate with software perception, hardware sensor development, and product teams to refine and support requirements development and OEM engagement
- Manage external suppliers and internal cross functional test teams to execute projects according to design, cost, and schedule commitments
Required qualifications
- BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years of industry experience in automotive ADAS systems or sensor development and design
- Strong background in mechanical design, applied fluid dynamics, robotics and/or mechatronics
- Proven strong background in developing and executing hands on test campaigns
- Skilled in the use of solid modeling CAD tools (ideally CATIA V6)
- Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing methods and conventions in accordance with ASME 14.5-2009
- Experience working directly with and managing relationships with suppliers, ideally automotive OEMs and/or Asia-based Contract Manufacturers
- Excellent oral, written, and communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
Desirable qualifications
- Experience conducting CFD analysis, ideally with ANSYS Workbench
- Experience in automotive cameras and sensors is a plus
- Experience with Matlab or Python or equivalent tool is a plus
