The Senior. Manager, Data Insights will report to the VP, Data and Growth and optimize how internal teams share data to unlock actionable business intelligence. This team is the data engine supporting Docker’s engineering, product, go-to-market (sales, marketing, customer success), and G&A teams. The Director will lead a team of high-performing data engineers, analysts, and scientists to build Docker’s next-generation data framework. This role is responsible for data governance, infrastructure management, advanced modeling, and providing the foundation for machine learning. As it is highly cross-functional, this role supports a bias for considered action and open collaboration across the entire organization by furnishing every team with immediate access to data. Success in this role requires a strong people manager who can invest in the growth of both technical experts and aspiring leaders and the ability to manage via influence across the data professionals nested within partnering organizations.

This data team will tremendously impact the future of Docker’s growth as the vision is to provide the foundation for product and business intelligence that will fuel critical insights across the company. This position will be a core member of the Data & Growth leadership team with opportunities to stretch beyond the bounds of the initial charter. This Director will work with the core executive team at Docker to understand near-term and long-term data needs and report on the progress of data optimization throughout the company. This role will also serve as a trusted consultant for org-wide initiatives focused on verticals outside of the core responsibilities. This role will also serve as a leadership resource for founding technical teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the roadmap and execution for data modeling, delivering data insights, prioritizing projects that align with business objectives and deliver measurable ROI.

  • Accountable for establishing, providing, maintaining, and owning Docker’s single source of truth for data

  • Facilitate discussions with business leaders to identify their data capabilities and align on objectives.

  • Maintain business capability, data, and processes while transitioning data services to an optimized state.

  • Mature data models using a framework that delivers on near-term business needs while optimizing for future needs at scale.

  • Partner in the strategic planning process by providing input to the definition of initiatives while providing visibility to impact, dependencies, overlaps, and opportunities.

  • Work closely with engineers, analyst and Data scientists to identify technical requirements and design, execute, and evolve data models for use across multiple analytic solutions.

  • Oversee data optimization projects across all business partners, from analysis through planning, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Build data strategy for Docker.

  • Build internal and external data products.

  • Responsible for the data project backlog and roadmap

  • Provide leadership, technical direction, and mentoring to data teams in the Data and Growth organization.

  • Own vendor relationships and define processes related to the evaluation and selection process of third-party systems/applications

  • Lead continuous analysis and improvement of data tech stack features, utilization, releases, best practices, and return on investments that align with the company & functional vision and strategy.

  • Build strong feedback loops with business partners (Onboarding, Knowledge Management, Methodology, Instructional Design) to create synergies across the collective data stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of work experience in leading teams to build modern data architectures with a focus on learning and development with progressively increasing responsibility

  • 6+ years of direct people management experience and a proven track record of developing data professionals.

  • Strong leadership skills

  • Extensive experience in data modeling and machine learning technologies

  • Experience in product management and engineering

  • Experience owning, implementing, and architecting large centralized data stores

  • Experience driving vendor selection and contract negotiation

  • A strong track record of both internal stakeholder influence and vendor partner management

  • Experience in working with cross-functional teams

  • Track record of leading high-growth teams and scale in a startup environment

  • Applied knowledge of the OKR framework preferred

  • Strong analytical talents to identify key metrics and how to improve operations to yield measurable impact

  • Accomplished in building and managing an incident response framework for data teams

  • Excellent in program management

What to expect

First 30 days

  • Meet every member of the data team under Data Insights, key stakeholders in product, sales, marketing, and Finance, and cross-functional data leaders in the virtual data organization to discover their opinions on what works and what doesn’t. Then, identify focus areas for optimization.

  • Based on input from the team and an assessment of the current state of data, structure the team and finalize the roles and responsibilities to support the team's mission and deliverables.

  • Identify the top priority for the team to focus on in the next 30/60/90 days.

First 90 days

  • Deliver the data insights strategy for Docker.

  • Lead the virtual data organization in strategic planning and execution of prioritized projects.

  • Streamline the workflow from stakeholders' demands to actual deliverables for each data team.

  • Deliver the strategy plan to enable self-serve data analytics and roll out core data models.

  • Present the current data state and our Data insights strategy and execution plan moving forward to the leadership team.

  • Deliver a core set of metric definitions that are aligned across functional teams.

  • Finalize the North Star Metrics definition for all products and deliver the 2 sets of measurement and reporting of North Star Metrics.

  • Institute health metrics with a weekly review cadence to measure every data project complete with key performance indicators.

  • Set expectations on the deliverables. Mentor and guide the team so they can run day-to-day core functions of data operations without your direct engagement.

One Year Outlook

  • Lead the data Insights team to deliver data projects on time and with quality.

  • Streamline operation

  • Provide a crystal clear view of the company's data insights project backlog and roadmap.

  • Deliver data insights (not just dashboard reports) to stakeholders.

  • Meet all milestones towards strategic initiatives like self-serve analytics, core data model rollout, etc.

  • The Data Team maintains a brand defined as customer-centric, helpful, and secure.
