PostHog helps engineers build better products. We are a single platform to analyze, test, observe, and deploy new features. We give engineers product & web analytics, session replay, feature flags, experiments, a CDP, SQL access, and a data warehouse… and there’s plenty more to come.
PostHog was created as an open-source project during Y Combinator's W20 cohort and had the most successful B2B software launch on HackerNews since 2012 - with a product that was just 4 weeks old. Since then, more than 70,000 companies have installed the platform. We've had huge success with our paid upgrades, raised $27m from some of the world's top investors, and have shown strong product-led growth - 97% driven by word of mouth.
We're growing quickly but sustainably - we're default alive, averaging 10% monthly revenue growth, with >$10m ARR. We're staying focused on building an awesome product for end users, hiring a handful of exceptional team members, and seeing fantastic growth as a result.
What we value
We are open source - building a huge community around a free-for-life product is key to PostHog's strategy.
We aim to become the most transparent company, ever. In order to enable teams to make great decisions, we share as much information as we can. In our public handbook everyone can read about our roadmap, how we pay (or even let go of) people, what our strategy is, and who we have raised money from. We also have regular team-wide feedback sessions, where we share honest feedback with each other.
Working autonomously and maximizing impact - we don’t tell anyone what to do. Everyone chooses what to work on next based on what is going to have the biggest impact on our customers.
Solve big problems - we haven't built our defining feature yet. We are all about acting fast, innovating, and iterating.
Who we’re looking for
We’re not entirely sure! This is our first time hiring someone in this role, so we’ll need you to help us work it out with us. But we’ve got some ideas…
Your mission is to help get more people in relevant communities to hear about PostHog. We’ve built a really strong word-of-mouth engine so far, and now we want to augment that by increasing awareness of PostHog in the places where our (potential) users like to hang out, like YouTube, Reddit, and Twitter.
You’ll be a key voice of PostHog in these communities and will be regularly talking to people across various channels, so representing PostHog in a genuine way in keeping with our brand is a must. Maybe you won’t even mention PostHog at all sometimes - that’s ok! If you go all super sales-y ‘hey you should check out PostHog’ like the rest of our boring competitors, you won’t succeed.
If you join us today, you’ll have an opportunity to get in exceptionally early at a time when our growth is rocketing.
What you’ll be doing
These are the things that broadly we want you to do - but you shouldn’t see this as a comprehensive list! We expect a lot of the stuff you’re doing in this role to be things that you think we should be doing too.
We’ve done some initial work with content creators like Theo and the results have been great! We think creators could be huge for us, but we need someone to drive this and make sponsoring creators a repeatable process. Yes, we will give you a sensible budget.
People ask about PostHog a lot on places like Reddit, Twitter, and HN, as well as a bunch of closed Slack/Discord groups that we’re probably not even aware of. We’re missing a big opportunity to be really helpful in these places. Think ‘here’s an answer to your question’ not ‘let me pitch you PostHog’.
Weird or IRL meetup ideas. For example, we think it would be cool to rent out Hackspaces and let the community use them for free. Should we do meetups in the future? Maybe!
We don’t currently have a single person managing our company's social media presence -this is working fine for now as it's not a big growth driver for us, but if you want to own this then go for it.
What you won’t be doing
❌ Speaking at events and conferences - they take up too much time compared to some of the other ideas we’d like to pursue first.
❌ Doing big, splashy projects - you’ll need to try a bunch of different things to see what sticks.
❌ Doing a big plan and launch is not the PostHog way.
❌ Spending lots of time writing docs - occasional updates when you see confused users are encouraged, but you shouldn’t spend lots of time writing.
❌ Waiting for us to give you your next task.
(Tl;dr - this is a community role, not a dev advocate/devrel role)
Requirements
You have full-stack development experience. You don’t need to have been a professional engineer, but we’ll want to see that you’ve built small apps or side projects yourself.
You are very organized and good at following through, chasing people down - that kind of thing. Working with content creators means you can’t get disheartened when they don’t reply to your emails or deliver things on time - you need to be resilient.
You are highly optimistic and personable, and motivated to help others.
Nice to have
Experience managing and growing brand awareness within online communities.
Experience working with similar products, ie. developer tools more broadly, or specifically product analytics, session replay, feature flags, A/B testing, data warehouses, or data pipelines.
We believe people from diverse backgrounds, with different identities and experiences, make our product and our company better. That’s why we dedicated a page in our handbook to diversity and inclusion. No matter your background, we'd love to hear from you!
Also, if you have a disability, please let us know if there's any way we can make the interview process better for you - we're happy to accommodate!
